Minnie Mouse – Fun Facts And History You Probably Didn’t Know

Minnie Mouse, just like her famous boyfriend Mickey Mouse, is hugely popular and she enjoys being the main character at a lot of themed birthday parties around the world.

Minnie Mouse was born not long after Mickey in 1928 and was in his debut of Steamboat Willie, although Mickey Mouse overshadowed her. Minnie Mouse then came to life again and appeared alongside Mickey in the 1929 short called ‘Plane Crazy.’

Since then she has appeared in about 73 cartoons with Mickey Mouse and Pluto and is now also very popular on the Disney Channel in ‘House of Mouse.’

Minnie Mouse History

Her real name is Minerva Minnie Mouse. Her parents are Marcus and Margie Mouse. Her parents were introduced in the comic strip ‘Mr. Slicker and the Egg Robbers.’ They are both farmers. On the wall in the background, you could also see pictures of her grandparents, Marshall and Matilda Mouse.minnie mouse

Her other more well-known relatives include her Uncle Mortimer Mouse and her twin nieces, Millie and Melody Mouse. Mini Mouse is chiefly portrayed as Mickey Mouse’s girlfriend and the best friend of Daisy Duck.

Clothing

Minnie Mouse loves wearing the color red and she is particularly well known for her oversized high heeled pumps, which she often walks right out of.

She started off by looking considerably like a flapper type of girl, and her knickers with a patch showed all the time, but as the years drew on she became more conservative in her dress sense.

In her early years, Minnie wore a hat instead of her signature bow. In 1940, Mickey and Minnie were both redesigned. During this makeover, a large bow replaced Minnie’s hat. They also put bows on her shoes.

Minnie Mouse loves polka dots and there are many lovely Minnie Mouse outfits that can be purchased online very reasonably. Here below are a few gorgeous examples. To find out more simply click on the picture.

Minnie Mouse The Star

Minnie appeared in many cartoons alongside Mickey during the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. She took a bit of a back seat to Donald Duck and Goofy in the late 1930’s.

Minnie’s popularity polls still run a close second to Mickey Mouse. In fact, 1986 was made ‘Minnie’s Year’ at the Disney theme parks. In the course of that year, she was much better known, and eventually got the recognition she had waited for so long.

The Voice

Well, believe it or not, a man voiced her first. Walt Disney was the original voice of Minnie and continued to voice her for about a year. Marjorie Ralston then took over as the voice of Minnie and Minnie has been only voiced by women since.

After Marjorie,  Marcel Lite Garner did Minnie’s voice.

The next Minnie Mouse voice was Thelma Boardman from 1940-1942 and Ruth Clifford 1942-1952.

The ladies all came from Disney’s ink and paint department at the Disney Studio.

Janet Waldo voiced Minnie in the 1974 Disneyland Record Album, An Adaptation of Dicken’s Christmas Carol, Performed by the Walt Disney Players. Minnie wouldn’t speak again until 1986 when Russi Taylor took over the role.

When in 1986, Russi Taylor became the voice of Minnie Mouse and she still does it to date.

Russi Taylor, also voices Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Russi Taylor has a prolific voice acting career. She voices many characters both in and outside the Disney universe.

In her 89 years of Minnie Mouse’s animated life, only 7 people have spoken for her. In comparison, Mickey Mouse has had 14 different voice actors.

Her Boyfriends

Over the year’s Mickey and Mortimer Mouse have competed for Minnie’s affections. As with all the happy endings, Mickey Mouse continually wins Minnie’s heart.  In the cartoon ‘Mickey’s Rival,’ the rivalry between the two first began.

While the cartoon mice have never officially tied the knot, their voice actors have. Minnie’s current voice actress, Russi Taylor, married Wayne Allwine, who voiced Mickey for 32 years. They remained married until Allwine’s death in May 2009.

In a 1933 interview, Walt Disney said, “in private life, Mickey is married to Minnie”.

Her Pets

In the short cartoon The Picnic (1930), Minnie introduces her new dog, Rover, to Mickey. Rover was renamed Pluto and became Mickey’s pet in the short cartoon The Moose Hunt (1931).

Then Mini got another dog called Fifi the Peke. Fifi and Pluto went on to have a litter of puppies.

Minnie’s most well-known pet is Figaro, the kitten from Pinocchio.

Figaro was Walt Disney’s favorite character in Pinocchio and he wanted to use the character more. Walt made Figaro Minnie’s pet, replacing Fifi’s appearances in Minnie’s cartoons.

Other Roles

Minnie starred in Totally Minnie in 1988. This was a musical TV special with Suzanne Sommers as the host and guest appearances by Mickey Mouse, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto.

In this TV show, Minnie sang a duet with Elton John and the song was ‘Don’t Go Breakin My Heart.’

She also taught Robert Carradine, who played a nerd, how to be accepted and cool on the Minnie Mouse Center for the Totally Un-hip. This television show was Minnie’s very first starring role.Minnie Mouse

Minnie Mouse is also known worldwide and is a prominent figure in the Disney theme parks. She is often seen with Mickey Mouse and everyone loves to pose with this couple for photographs while paying a visit to a Disney park.
